JERK Report #21 I didn't know what I didn't know.
A woman I talked with Sunday morning uses AI every day.
She talks to ChatGPT. They brainstorm. Some days the ideas flow, some days they don't. She would tell you, without a pause, that she uses AI in her business.
And she's right. By every survey in the country, she's right.
She's in the half of American adults who now use these tools. Pew put it at 49% this spring — up from a third two years ago. A quarter of us use them daily now. On the numbers, she is exactly where everyone is.
We spent an hour together. Near the end, she said the thing I keep turning over.
"I didn't know what I didn't know."
She wasn't behind. She was using a fraction of a thing she thought she'd already picked up. And the fraction felt like the whole.
Most people are watching the adoption number. Half of us use AI now. Feels like the story is over. Everyone's in. But adoption is part one. The gap is part two.
If we read the JERK Signals:
What is the distance between what these tools can actually do and what a normal person actually does with them — and which way is that distance moving?
Position
Usage looks finished. Half of adults on the chatbots. Forty-four percent on ChatGPT. A quarter of us in there daily. If you only look at the snapshot, the market is full. Many have arrived.
Velocity
The frontier moves every week. I track it — that's most of what this newsletter is. New things become possible on a schedule you just can't keep up with.
Acceleration
The pace is accelerating-upward. 2024 was the year most people wowed about it. 2025 was the year we tried it. 2026 is the year it separates. The distance between "I learned this six months ago" and "here's what's possible now" is not just wide. It's widening faster than it was.
Jerk
The experts who study this think 79% of us are using AI constantly. Ask the public, and only 27% think they are. The people riding the curve can't feel it move. They think they've got it.
When you can't feel the acceleration, you stop updating. And when you stop updating on something that's speeding up, you fall off the edge of the map without noticing. Nothing feels wrong. The floor just quietly moves. So the split coming isn't users and non-users. That fight is over.
The split is fluent and plateaued.
And the plateau feels like progress.
The woman on Sunday had adopted. She was in.
What she'd missed was the size of the room she was standing in. She was standing at the door, while being sure she was in the middle.
Your five-minute practice this week
Before you open anything, write down one number.
One to ten. How fluent are you with AI in your business.
Your honest guess. Don't overthink it.
Now open your favorite LLM and ask: "Rate my current use of AI in my work, not in general, against what someone fluent with these tools would be doing. Give me a number out of ten. Then list what a fluent user would be doing that I'm not. Don't tell me how to do any of it. Just show me the gap."
Read its number. Compare it to yours.
The distance between the two numbers is what this whole issue is about.
You had a guess. It had an answer.
When they don't match, that is what "I didn't know what I didn't know" feels like, measured.
Then read the list. Don't act on it. Just count it.
For most people it isn't two or three things. It's most of the list.
That's information, not failure.
You can't cross a gap you can't see. Now you can, and you know how wide.
On Monday 7/20/26, I start with AI fluency itself.
By Friday we're running hot seats.
Come in wherever your number landed.
Workshop Week. That's fluency starting.
